DAVID SEQUEIRA

Somewhere sometime

SEPTEMBER 2 - SEPTEMBER 20, 2008

PRESS RELEASE 2008

In David’s first ever show at the Ryan Renshaw Gallery he is presenting a beautiful and quirky array of new works. It will, as always with David’s exhibitions be a visual feast. It includes paintings worked over old found oil landscapes – including a 1859 Austrian oil painting. They are magnificently framed in gold and baroque frames. He combines this with mirrored works and a few breakaway dots that escape the frames and run wildly throughout the gallery. The overall effect is mesmerizing. It’s an exhibition not to be missed.

David Sequeira is a storyteller. He weaves compelling narratives, sharing with his audience anecdotes and reminiscences that lead you into a world where art and life coincide. In a body of works that embraces different media with catholic exuberance, Sequeira explores the space between here and now, between the openness of a child and the knowingness of an adult, between the work of art and other objects in the world, between the artist and his audience. David Sequeira's work investigates the visual systems used to convey knowledge, particularly such knowledge that is not easily expressed by the logical structure of the written language. Using geometric patterns and incorporating natural elements, he explores the quest for enlightenment that has preoccupied philosophers and sages from all cultures.

Working in a range of media, David explores the notions of language and information through colour and geometry. It is this notion of colour and geometry that provides the catalyst that drives the idea and the element of continuity threading through his work.

Over the last 12 years David has exhibited his work extensively throughout Australia at venues including the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. His work has been regularly profiled in art journals including the Sydney based magazine Art and Australia and the Los Angeles based Art & Text. He has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Australia Council’s studio residency in Paris and the Collex Museum of Contemporary Art acquisitive prize. This will be David’s first exhibition at the Ryan Renshaw Gallery.
