ARTIST STATEMENT
After arriving in Norway in 2007, I was struck by a game that took place within the Norwegian art scene. On one hand Norwegian artists, and Norwegian art students in particular, are some of the least vulnerable and most protected beings on the planet. The level of social welfare and democratic process is unparalleled to anything I have experienced before. At the same time, there is an attitude within the norwegian contempary art scene that resembles something close to the theatrics of risk taking. This work, made while a student at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, has something to do with an attempt at identifying my own position.
Safe was also made at the point when the confidence in some of the structures supporting me and others were revealed to be hollow. So Safe is a reflection on both my position and, in a broader sense, the fragility of an idea that is largely based on collective confidence.
